Task: with a cheap bluray/SACD-player over hdmi to I2S->ES9038Q2M

so, in short: 😉

idea is to buy a cheap bluray-player (Sony BDPS570 for example) with SACD-capability and then sending the DSD-information over hdmi to a hdmi -> I2S converter and then via I2S to an ES9038Q2M for example..(btw. absolutely “common practice” in the “hi-fi”-world).

we had such a hdmi-i2s-converter-discussion some time ago->http://essabre-90xx-rpi.sfb2.com/?s=hdmi..->

(and beware: there are lot of different hdmi->I2S sender/receiver-boards: ones are only for transmitting the I2S-signal between them and the other “extract” the audio-signals/I2S from the HDMI-stream ! (had made a new category”->”HDMI to I2S”; will explain it in a later post)

there are also complete “solutions” for that, and also i´ve read just now that u can burn your own SACDs with Nero for example..

(50$/37$ Aliexpress->https://de.aliexpress.com/item/1005001265826217.html ; https://de.aliexpress.com/item/33031920347.html )

i´m in the “gathering-information” state 😉 right now , will post then more about it,

greets for now 😉

HDMI I2S LVDS to I2S /-modules / incompatible XMOS-driver V4.45 Win-10 / new ESP32s

so, 😉
in waiting/looking for a toroidal 15V-0-15V transformer and the right case and thinking about the “maximum” 😉 DIY-DAC + connections i came back again to some HDMI I2S LVDS to I2S-connections/modules..

Audiophonics has some there (25€+shipping)->https://www.audiophonics.fr/en/diy-interfaces/hdmi-i2s-lvds-to-i2s-input-module-hdmi-i2s-lvds-to-i2s-output-p-12422.html (u can get the same here for 21$ without shipping (costs)->https://www.ebay.com/itm/New-HDMI-to-IIS-I2S-Receiver-Board-Conversion-Board-Module-With-I2S-Switching-/332651861540
interesting by this “Audiophonics”-module is the selectable dual-I2S-input option ->

(u can get single “ones” here for 15$->https://www.audiophonics.fr/en/diy-interfaces/interface-module-hdmi-lvds-input-to-i2s-p-12683.html?search_query=hdmi%20i2s&fast_search=fs)

meanwhile i think u have to include such a “I2S-HDMI”-option because we got more and more USB-bridges with I2S-HDMI-out like the Gustard U-16 (see some earlier posts, LINK ) or some Singxer SU-1 for example..

Audio-GD also made equipment with this connection and interesting would be if it has great benefits in modding a “transporter” means CD/DVD-Audio/Bluray-player and so on to bypass the spdif-connection/conversion and directly connect the transporters internal I2S-connection to an I2S-HDMI output module like this:(Link)

by that it is recommend only to use (hdmi-)cable shorter than 50cm->”..which needs to be kept as short as possible to uphold decent signal integrity”..
Kitsune for example has some there also by only 30cm (as example)(9,90$)->LINK
by that, i´ve faced some incompatilibity issues with the XMOS-USB-driver V4.45 (on my Skysong (Singxer)-USB-bridge) since the last Win10-updates (stuttering); reverted back to V4.36 (but still not “optimal”)..(link to the driver in the forum->Forum)

also i´ve got some new (Geekcreit Doit.am Devkit V1-36pin) ESP32 from banggood (to have a spare)->Link

it looks a little bit different and i also think there´s a “fresher” Wroom32-module on it (newer revision)..

more to come, greets for now 😉

Singxer SU-1 Driver update V4.45 (06.Juli 2018) V7.24 / I2S-HDMI-pinout / Matrix X-Sabre Pro 9038Pro

so, 😉
came by chance about this new “Singxer” USB-Class-driver V4.45..we were at V4.36 and its directly from the same “shenzhenaudio”-folder/website->https://download.shenzhenaudio.com/Singxer/SU-1_driver_7.24_update/,
where we got our lovely “Singxer_USBAudio_v4.36.0_2017-11-14_DSD512.rar” from; i will test it here; but my ES9038Q2M is now connected to the Pi; will see..(post the driver-pack at the forum too->Link)
The Singxer SU-1 is equipped with one ES9038Q2M + a XMOS XU-208->https://www.amazon.com/Singxer-digital-interface-XU208-DSD256/dp/B01N1OQY1A, https://kitsunehifi.com/product/singxersu1black/

by that i saw some I2S-HDMI-port pinout on the “Matrix X-Sabre Pro ES9038PRO 32Bit/768kHz DSD1024 Audio DAC“->https://www.shenzhenaudio.com/matrix-x-sabre-pro-es9038pro-32bit-768khz-dsd1024-audio-dac.html;
it says:”DSD1024 PCM768
As a new generation of Matrix flagship DAC, X-SABRE Pro not only supports 32Bit/768kHz PCM audio stream playback, but also supports DSD64, DSD128, DSD256, DSD512, and even supports DSD1024 with the sample rate of 45.158MHz via IS input port.”

(thats all “old” stuff; but just to remember)

greets for now.. 😉

Hifi-fine-tuning / some little thoughts / external 5V – XMOS-bridges (“Skysong” here)

so,  😉

today some little thoughts about hifi-fine-tuning here..

as i´ve ordered again some “green” “SMPCB V1.07” (its the fourth meanwhile, burnt one as testing out some dual dc ;-( ) and as i´m stuck now to buy some new bluray-player (for hdmi to i2S) i´ve reactivated my Skysong XMOS-bridge (http://essabre-90xx-rpi.sfb2.com/?p=1883) ->I2S->ES9038Q2M (green V1.07) to get some hifi “with ease” (from PC)..

cause i´ve got a little trouble at higher-resolutions (24/192) i´ve feeded the xmos-bridge (think its the same with all of them) again with an external 5V power-source, et voilá, again such a great difference to the usb-powered thing (said a lot about it in the above mentioned blogpost)->really again 10-15% better tune, hifi-began 😉 , means the music “disengages” from the speaker..

okay, and as i think my new Mission LX-2 are very “roomy” + “light”, i´ve got sometimes the feel that the old Mission 780 sound a little bit more “hifi” in some cases; they seem to be more “vocal”-focussed..

to “compensate” this i thought i change the standard NE5532 to my “heavenly” AD797ANZ (http://essabre-90xx-rpi.sfb2.com/?p=1693) as they have these unbelievable room, and some 3D-ish at their own and correspondent absolutely perfect with the sabre-chip-characteristica->”..i think the speciality on these Sabre-Chips is this digitally room/3D-feeling + also with the great soundstage..so i stay, as said, with the AD797ANZ

(we had a schematic of the recommended op-amps for the ES9038Q2M, also with greater dynamic + thd/dnr etc..))->

so, i´m listening right now to these “combo” with the “heavenly” AD797ANZ (although i think they sound also a little bit “distorted”) and try to get the best out these special (what i like so much) roomy/3D-ish ess-sabre “hyperstream” technology (and to find the right speaker + amplifier for it)..

will post more in future, stay tuned and have a nice “happy new year” !! 😉

Cambridge Audio (or other) IR-repeater Option 5 / Broadlink RMmini3 / Fire TV Cube (2.Gen)

so, folks 😉

unfortunately nothing new from here concerning ES9038Q2Ms (or audio-sound-wise) but got today some “Broadlink RMmini3” for cheap (7,50€ incl.shipping/Ebay, “normal” about ca. 20€) to test out the “Alexa” (-uuaargh ;-( )-functionality of my new bought Amazon-Fire-TV-Cube (was on “easter-sale” on Amazon, 60€ instead of 120€ (more later))..

i primarily wanted to use the RM3mini as an alternative for my Cambridge-Audio IR-remote which is really,really bad in terms of ir-range (i think 3cm max directly right in front of the amp 😉 )..

I´ve made 4 “tutorials” of this, “Cambridge IR-repeater”->http://essabre-90xx-rpi.sfb2.com/?s=cambridge+audio, first via bluetooth (DIY), then “web-controlled” (html), third with some mqtt-broker-thing on a Pi, and then “over-simple”, only with an Arduino, some ir-transmitter + -receiver +some dupont-cable->http://essabre-90xx-rpi.sfb2.com/?p=1939,

and now  i thought, i say “Volume down” or “Aux” in the firecube remote and the RM3mini will do it (more maybe later)..

okay, got it today, and it has really a superb ir-coverage (there a 5 or 6 led-transmitter in it), the apps according to it (“Broadlink IR-remote” etc..) are a little bit tricky to install, but the “learning-procedure” (in using the buttons on the original remote) itself is very simple..

fine..u have a great “template”-collection, i used a very simple one (see above) but u can easily customize it..

so, just started the “Alexa”-integration with the “Broadlink”-Skill, but its a bit more complicated then for 5 minutes..

okay, now to the Fire-TV-Cube (2.Gen)->absolutely greater video (+20% compared to Fire-Stick 4K)-quality (“deeper” colors + contrast) + also audio is much better..

in these Fire-Cube 4Ks is some Amlogic S922x with 6-core and 2GB Ram..these Amlogic S922x were the “high-end-boards” of the other Android-TV-Boxes..got years ago 2 of them here (and still) , the first also had some spdif-output and could play flac-files up to 96khz or 192khz (which was not common in the early times of mini-media-player (“WD-player”, Asus O-play and such) and i used Kodi on these boxes..(okay, now with all the “HDMI”-tutorials here on the site, u can still get a good clean sound/tune out of it)..

anyway, “Kodi V19.4 (ARMv7/32bit)” runs absolutely great, fast and very good on these 4K-Cubes (as said 6-core, 2GB Ram)..

and because Kodi runs so absolutely smooth, i thought about to “pimp-up” the audio-line a little bit (besides the normal HDMI-output), and i knew that these Amlogic 922x also has some I2S-output (original design) but on the Amazon-Cube-board its after the first “check” not available/disabled/not carried out->

(more here ->  https://de.ifixit.com/Anleitung/Amazon+Fire+TV+Cube+Motherboard+Replacement/116369)

anyway, we could use (with the help of our great “HDMI”-tutorials here 😉 ) the hdmi-output with some hdmi-audio-extractor to I2S and tell Kodi to put it out “native”/bit-correct/”hdmi-passthrough”..(havent check it out here at present)..

so, that was it for now, as said “hi-fi”-bricolage (with case,toroidal,es9038q2m) is a little bit on hold but i´ll post then maybe more about it..

but many greets and have a happy easter !! 😉

Little update: ES9038Pro / SMPCB v1.07 better than Skysong ES9038Q2M / new ES9068AS

so, 😉

a little update:

re-checked a few days ago these “SMPCB 1.07″ (Green) against the Skysong ES9038Q2M and for me, the “SMPCP v1.07” has a much better sound/tune than the Skysong-board: more crispy + dynamic (IMHO)..

by that, as we are now “through” with the ES9038Q2M, the next step will be a ES9038Pro (or ES9068AS, see at the bottom) 😉 (the “balanced” output-options are also very interesting..)

also i´ve heard some new AKM4495 in a high-end headphone-amp surrounding (by a friend), and for me these “velvet-sound”-(branding) from these AKM-chips is for me (as ESSabre-“enthusiast”) still “hearable”/present, although these two approaches (Sabre+AKM) are coming more and more close to each other the more “high-end” they come..very close meanwhile..

(update: SMSL-8U (ES9068AS-chipset)-review->https://www.head-fi.org/showcase/s-m-s-l-su-8s.25206/reviews ->”..to put it shortly, it sounds very good considering its price. A trained ear will quickly recognize that quick and sharp Sabre sound signature. Highs are bright and airy, mid-range is clean and informative, emphasizing crisp edges and transients“)

so, found by chance some ES9038Pro-“implementation” in a SMSL-SU-9 (450$) (see pictures, audioscene-review is here->https://www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?threads/smsl-su-9-balanced-dac-review.16150/ ) 😉

they “measured” it at a very high (they called it “Sinad”) point with 121db (SNR)->”..it is my pleasure to highly recommend the SMSL SU-9. Great job.”

point is, that u also see, that these dual DC is absolutely “uber-important” + by that the SU-9N uses the xmos216 + theres also a “new” ES9068AS on the market, for example in some Topping E50->https://de.shenzhenaudio.com/products/topping-e50-dac-es9068as-mqa-xu216-32bit-768khz-dsd512-decoder-ultra-low-noise-preamp-headphone-dac , also with some “CPLD” jitter reduction (guess its a hardware-solution like in the Chord-Mojo (FPGA) for example)

will have to check out the difference (and price) to an ES9038Pro and if this chipset (ES9068AS) will also being implemented on some cheap chinese-boards..we will look  for it 😉 ->”A18 (AK4499) vs X16 (ES9068AS)-“shootout” is here->https://www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?threads/new-gustard-twin-shootout-a18-ak4499-vs-x16-es9068as.17428/

so, and as we´ve learned soo much about the right power-supply-chain and i2s-hdmi-connection-things and and and 😉 , we can just sit back and relax and wait for the new cheap chinese-essabre-boards to come out 😉 ..

many greets for now ! 😉

some quick and dirty pics from the DIY-DAC / best sound via Pi4->SkysongXMOS-Bridge->ES9038Q2M (with Burson V5-D)

so, 😉

bought today again some little stuff for the main-goal here on the site->the own “DIY-DAC/network-streamer” 😉 ..

decided to built it with a separate power supply/-unit (like for example these Mission-PSXs combos (have often posted about it)..(to eliminate any electronical interference/-noise)(the original “combos” were only for cleaner/stronger “power”)->

and so, i have ordered some dual voltage AC/DC-converter (rectifier), because the manufacturer always say “..best results with a dual 15V-0-15V power source/supply” (although the chip itself (ES9038Q2M) runs with 3,3V VCC max. (see this Datasheet ES9038Q2M (LINK))..(guess its about the LM78/9X “.fixed linear voltage regulator integrated circuits” (i think they took the fixed 15V-version of it)..

anyway, separated today the transformer/power-supply for the ESP32s,oled-display,AK4113 digital receiver etc. to a separate case (in this case also the massive Cyrus-PSX toroidal-transformer (dual 27V) will find his housing))

(Ebay, AC/DC (max. 36V) to 5V-15V Dual Voltage Converter Board Mini Rectifier Power Supply Module, 6€ ->LINK )

and okay, as “i fired it up” with the Pi4 + Volumio and my other XMOS-bridge (Leaf-audio), got problems in detecting it by the Pi, i used then these absolute wonderful Skysong-XMOS-bridge !! (posted also a lot of it before->http://essabre-90xx-rpi.sfb2.com/?p=1883 ) and got these beautiful tune/sound again !! (and its btw. only with these Skysong-bridge (the Leaf-audio (XMOS too) for example sounds lightyears worser)..

got “dynamic-wise” about minimum 5db 😉 more “frequency-spectrum” then with my Bluray-HDMI-I2S-extraction-combo (and thats almost the best/optimum combo for this transporter/hdmi/i2s things)..

absolutely fantastic !! (as said “the Pi is made for music” + these wonderful “best XMOS-implementation” Skysong-bridge !!)

that was it for now, more to come, many greets and stay tuned !! 😉

Panasonic DMP BDT 385 / playing finally .dsf/.dff-files / Toroidal transformer – Talema (Cyrus PSX) 27,9V

so, 😉

got today finally a Panasonic DMP BDT 385 (got it cheap from Ebay, 17€, faulty, couldn´t recognize a bluray-disc anymore) to test the DSD-functionality + to compare it with my other Sony + Philips Blurayplayer here..

very nice, detect and play any .dsf/.dff-files which i have on my usb-drive..the Sony only detects Sony-“tagged” .dsfs and the Philips only Philips .dffs 😉 ; the pansonic plays them all + also other “non-tagged”-DSD-files->stupid..

by that, the “quantizing-noise” (and i think thats mainly the “white noise”) is absolutely more less via my hdmi-extraction-board + ES9038Q2M-combo here then via the Sony for example; have to test + evaluate it more..(its still an I2S-connection problem i guess->soldering)

DSD-files are btw. outputted at 88.2/24 via toslink (besides over HDMI of course)->

picture-quality + handling-/usability-wise its a lot more “basic” then with the Sony BDP-7200 for example..thought first why Panasonic have such a good reputation, i felt it too “basic”, but in the end its okay (but its really about your personal taste and overall the Sony is better (for my taste)).

by that i got by chance a really, really, massive (guess 5kg !! or so) Talema toroidal-transformer 220V/2*27,9V..was originally from a Mission Cyrus PSX only power supply expansion (posted a lot of  it before)-> heavy bummer !! 😉

wanted originally some 15V-0-15V toroidal for the chinese ES9038Q2M but will use it as power supply for the DAC and for the rest of things in our “DIY-DAC” !! (esp32s,arduino-display,usb-bridge,AK4113-digital to i2s receiver etc..)

will post a lot more about it, cause that was the “main goal” with this site->ourDIY-DAC !!” 😉

greets or now + much more to come !! 😉
