New speaker / little experience-report / Volumio at 2.861 / some new ES9038Pro DACS / Universal USB to I2S Interface Indicator

so, 😉

as i´ve bought some „new“ speaker (Mission Cyrus 780 (one bass driver was defect, had to order some spare from GB)), i´ve had to re-adjust/re-set/re-listen to my hifi in general..

I´ve just bought some AMD Ryzen on some Asus-Board too and so i could test the nowadays „onboard-sound-solutions“ (in this case some Realtek S1220A with 120db SNR) against some „normal CD-transporter“ or some Raspberry PI 4 over USB->I2S to some ES9038Q2M..

Absolutely still no comparison !! ->we forget these onboard-sound now and go directly to the USB->XMOS-USB-Bridge->I2S->ES9038Q2M vs. Raspberry Pi -> XMOS USB-Bridge->I2S->ES9038Q2M thing..

First thought (over PC->XMOS-USB->I2S->ES9038Q2M) these ESSabre-engineers „add/or re-invented“ some really funny/sunny/airy components to the digital stream..absolutely lovely, much „more voluminous“, airier..(these advanced-bitstream-thing))

But after connected to the Raspberry Pi 4 via USB(3.0)->XMOS-USB-Bridge->I2S->ES9038Q2M its still an enermous „lap ahead“, guess its absolutely because of the short electronical circuits on the Pi (less latencies) and the less EMI-interferences on some PI-boards against the „noise“ on some normal PC-mainboards..

So its again some „normal“ CD-transporter (over spdif to some dac/ES9038xx) vs. Pi-4 (for saved media-content)..

Updated my volumio-software on the Pi-4 (now at V2.851), absolutely great, super fast „scrolling“ through the libraries (more CPU-power Pi-4)..

So conclusion for now (again):->forget the soundcard/USB-thing from the PC/MAC->its still about „normal“ CD-transporter vs Raspberry Pi ->USB-bridge->ES9038xxx..

I´ve also bought some Synology DS214Play now->absolutely great, no lags/problems now, absolutely smooth..

by that i´ve found right now by chance these „Arduino-based Universal USB to I2S Interface Indicator“ by; its here-> (+ there are a lot of very interesting infos about sabre+akm-boards in general on this site !!)

thats exactly for what i searched soo long !! (.ino is here->LINK)

also found some new ES9038Pro-DACS on massdrop for example->will post then more about it..

greets for now !! 😉

NAS-stuff (Part 2): Synology Diskstation DS211/J + Ünnlink 192 + XPenology + ITX-Case

so, okay, 😉

as i still plan to buy some Topping D50S, S.M.S.L Sanskrit 10th Mk.2 or Topping D10S,

(picture: SMSL Sanskrit 10th MKII, 110$, Amazon->Link )

i´ve meanwhile bought a very simple so called mini-DAC 😉 (just for converting tos/coax to chinch for my home tv) from aliexpress for only 9$ !! (incl.shipping) -> the „Ünnlink 192Khz Digital to Analog Audio Converter Decoder Spdif Toslink Coaxial to Analog Stereo 3.5mm 2RCA DAC with BT for TV“->

its a nice little guy 😉 , absolutely no problem with it and u will be surprised how good the audio quality is ! 😉 (and we are here on a self-called „hi-fi“-site 😉 with a lot of tests for hifi-gear) …

u can buy it (him 😉 ) without a problem..

Synology-OS („DSM“) Part 2:

and as said, as i got meanwhile data-rates up to 60-70MB/s with a non „J„-version i´m absolutely blown away by this wonderful Synology-OS („DSM“) that i thought about how to get it on „normal“ PCs, linux-devices and there is a way/possibility !!

„XPenology“ !!

Xpenology: The Definitive Guide (2020 Update)

i don´t know if this is „half-official“ or something (although its an „open source“-project) but i will give it a try in the next weeks/months and report about it..

because i like the design from the original Synology-Diskstations (the white ones) very much and because of these great OS i thought i´ve build my own little NAS (and mainly because the greater Synology-DSes are unbelievable expensive !! (in comparison to other PC-parts)) with a little cube + some ITX-boards !! for example)->

Thermaltake CA-1B8-00S6WN-01 Core V1 Mini-ITX Snow Edition PC-Case white->

(around 50$, Amazon->Link: )

or „Thermaltake“ direct link-> )

will post/report more then about it + no worry, i´ll be coming back to the „main-theme“ here (modding ESSabre 90xxQ2M/Pro-things) in future !! 😉

but many greets for now and have a nice christmas-time !! 😉

New: Topping D10s (1 x ES9038Q2M) vs. SMSL Sanskrit 10th SK10 MKII (AK4493)

hi there, 😉

unfortunately nothing new from here building/buying around some new ESSabre (9038Q2M) chips (DIY) but 2 new, interesting DACs „came up the table“ lately:

The Topping D10S with 1xES9038Q2M in it, XMOS XU208 + OPA2134  (changeable)->

goes for only 99$ !!  (Amazon,Aliexpress,Ebay,Audiophonics,Shenzhenaudio)..

a very detailed test about it is here (as always „audioscenereview“)->

and/or the SMSL Sanskrit 10th SK10 MKII for a little bit more (110$)  (Amazon) ->

audioscenereview-review is here->

question is which sounds better ? (i will make a new thread about it in the forum (Link) and hopefully someone will/can post his/her experiences with both of them)

as i originally wanted to buy some Topping D50S (2xES9038Q2M, 250$ Amazon) because of the 3 inputs (USB,coaxial,toslink) the Sanskrit would be the better choice..

but as i like these phenomenal, unbelievable, „airy“, „openstage“-sound from the ESSabre-chips sooo much, its the question if these AKM4493 were sounding similar..

more to come… (gather some more information about them (the two) right now) 😉

DIY-DAC: Telekom Media Receiver 303A as case/with 12V/3A power supply->as audio-streamer with Rpi4 + XMOS-USB-bridge + ESP32 as display-controller..

so, 😉

i´ve found a few days ago some „withdrawn from service“ 😉 Telekom (uarghh ;-( )  Media Receiver 303A->was first interested in the internal HDD->500GB Seagate, but have seen then this has also a built-in 12V/3A power-supply and its from the dimensions almost ideally as some Raspberry Pi4-ES9038Q2M-audiostreamer !! (not soo big) 😉

Display-wise its a little bit limited (due to the available space (height)) in the front, but some LCD1602 will maybe do it fine..

found then an easy way to connect some to an ESP32 via I2C and via some „web-remotes“ (see other posts here „Project-1“ etc..) we can select via some photocoupler/relais the inputs of the ES9038Q2M (Coax,Toslink, I2S/USB), adjust the hardware-volume, filter-selection and so on and can display the settings on the display/LCD1602) !!

so far so fine, but this is a heck of a lot work to do !! 😉 ..

(i´ve planned to use Volumio on the raspberry ->easy controlling via the web-interface, DLNA-capable, MPD etc..)..

as said, here at first testing-out some aspects/parts for it and a first result by example is that these 3A makes the „blue“ ES9038Q2M absolutely a little bit „airy(ier); had before some 2A power supply (12V)..

by that the „Leaf-XMOS-USB-bridge“ (-> is better than first thought..

+ also my new „ESP32“ will come to a new life 😉  (not to mention the Raspberry Pi4 2GB)

makes really a lot of fun here, and i will inform you about some further improvements !!

greets for now !! 😉

Bargain of the day->Topping D50S ! (Dual ES9038Q2M +XU208 +BT + Remote) / AK4137 SRC

so folks 😉 ,
sorry thats its a little bit silent here on essabre-90xx-rpi lately, but there were a lot of other things to do 😉 , but i´ve just seen by chance this bargain on massdrop->
Topping D50S, XU208+Dual ES9038Q2M + BT + Remote for only 200$ !! ->
vs. „old“ D50->
the D50S (in opposite to the D50) a built in BT-modul (was at first sight, in aspect to the „ultimate hi-fi“, is not soo good) but also comes with a remote-control + had made some improvement „soundwise“, means they solved the „IMD ESS hum“, where at mid-levels, intermodulation distortion suddenly rises“..

very good test/article about the D50S is here->

also they made some minor sound-improvements (all in the article)..

as said for only 200$ (190$ if u first join massdrop via these essabre-links here(„Xavier“)) its maybe worth a try..
so and as lately said that the onboard spdif-conversion (on the ES9038Q2M) is not so optimal we have to look for an alternative and also somebody said at my praised>Link that „..upsampling to DSD is always better concerning thd/snr and so on, because of eliminating/move the noise in an unaudible range..“ and to reduce jitter i´m thinking about to buy some SRC4192..(SNR= 768khz, DR: 186dB !! ● THD+N: -150dB ) ->

there are some around for only 27$ on ebay->Link and the „high-end“-version with toslink and coaxial option + 1.3″ display (+ AK4118 spdif-receiver chip) for 80$->Link..

my goal at present is to raise the sq directly from a transporter via spdif and then maybe upsampled, but still more jitter-less to feed it in the ES9038Q2M..

will maybe then report more about it..

by that the raspberry 4B+ is out and so on..maybe then more,

greets for now !! 😉

essabre-90xx-rpi.sfb2 has moved / Arduino + SSD1306 / ESP32 Bluetooth-serial / 3D-printer case

so, 😉
essabre-90xx-rpi.sfb2 has finally moved..was a bit more work then expected, right now i´m not 100% satisfied with the result->had btw. to change the symlinks-structure in wordpress, so some pics/categories will have another url + the „direct“-forum-link (at the top) has changed to a „2-click-experience“ 😉 + some minor changes, but overall i think its now a little bit faster + on a newer OS + a newer php-version..

second i´ve ordered some SSD1306 mini-tft-display test-wise some months ago, set it up on the third !! Arduino Uno finally (i´ve ordered 2 other Unos „in-a-row“ and they were both damaged) and got the following result (for u to see it in real life, to maybe get some ideas for your DIY-DAC)..

absolutely easy wiring + sketch;.ino is here->Link

third got by chance some really simple ESP32 Bluetooth-serial tutorial on „Random-Nerds„; ( 😉 ) maybe interesting for you->
fourth no new Volumio-version is out and a new drop is the SMSL-SU 8 Version 2 with two (dual) ES9038Q2M for 200$ instead of 250$->Link

fifth, no other news concerning the ES9038Q2M, nothing spectacular in the about it->
sixth i´m still planning to buy some 15V-0V-15V toroidal transformer and for the case i was looking for some „3D-printer“-layouts/submittals; had found a site (don´t know the url right now) and maybe we could make a new „thread“ here or at the forum, for some „3D-printer“-submittals for the case !!

more to come + greets for now !!

Massdrop: SMSL SU-8 Version 2 DAC 200$ Dual ES9038Q2M + Volumio 2.565 (12-03-2019)

so folks 😉 ,
sorry that i lately post so much „massdrop“-related things, but this is first an audio (ESSabre)-site and second heavy related to the ES9038Q2M 😉
as said, DUAL ES9038Q2M on it, some additional specs:
Input: USB, optical, coaxial
Balanced !! Output: RCA, XLR
USB sampling rate: PCM: 44.1–768 kHz; DSD: 2.28224–22.5792 MHz
200$ (instead of 250$)
(PS.: and btw.: u get 10$ „start“-bonus !! if u join massdrop via these – link(s) (on the site + right via the „widget“(„Xavier“)) !!..
so hop, hop and join !! 😉 )
(„display-wise“ its not soo great, but for all these problems we have here on essabre-90xx-rpi „tons“ of display-tuts and possibilities (for DIY)) 😉

Driver (Shenzhen-Audio) are here (XMOS V4.47)->
and an review is here ->
interesting at this review is the following „SINAD„(some distortion-/noisemeter)-diagram, with some „oppononents“ like Benchmark DAC3, Schiit Modi USB, Chord Mojo, Katana, Auralic Vega and such->

by that some new „Volumio“ is out (now at VERSION: 2.565)->LINK, some fixes, and since V2.527:->Add direct DSD Support to many USB DACs, Mpd 0.20.18 version.. its a little bit on „hold“, just ordered (as said before) some Burson V5i-D and can then report about the Op-Amp and the „general“-massdrop-experience..

greets from here for now and stay tuned !! 😉

New XMOS-USB-Driver (Skysong/Singxer) -> v4.59.0_2019-02-13 + Massdrop ES9038Pro

hi there, 😉
found by chance on then shenzhenaudio-website this new XMOS-USB-driver V4.59 (02/13/2019) originally for the Singxer SU1/SU6;
tested here with with the Skysong(Singxer)-XMOS-USB-device (XU208)(+ES9038Q2M) on Win10 -> works fine !!

by that there is some Dual !! ES9038PRO on Massdrop->

->Dynamic range: 131 dB
USB: PCM 44.1, 48, 88.2, 96, 176.4, 192, 352.8, 384, 705.6, 768 kHz

interesting is the separation from the device + power supply..
it is the same principle as maybe earlier with the Mission Cyrus Amps 1-3 with an extra PSX which cost the same !! (and i had luckily here) and which remind us of the great importance of a clean, strong power supply !!
